Did That Really Happen?
You know how you have those moments in life where you’re like “did that really happen???”
This was one of those moments.
I had gone to see Turnpike Troubadours play & I was waiting outside of the Neighborhood Theatre after the show to meet lead singer Evan Felker. It was a week night and I figured this was my chance. I’d seen them play a few times and I had some questions. Questions about the music. Was Lorrie a real person? How do you hedge a bet?
I was going straight to the man.
A little while later, Evan came outside and we ended up chatting for a bit. I don't usually get star struck, but I had spent sooo much time listening to his music and following his career. I was a fan. I was star struck. That trip I took down the PCH a few years ago was just me and Turnpike for a week on the road. So much soul searching and memories were made on that trip. It was one of the most memorable road trips I'd ever taken. Evan seemed so laid back and the next thing I know he says “Hey, you don’t know where a pool table is around here, do ya?” I sure did! (It was literally right next door). The next thing I know, I’m hanging out & watching the guys play pool with the guys from Frenchie and the Blues Destroyers.
IS THIS HAPPENING?
I tried to be cool; I was anything but. Evan on the other hand was a regular guy who was down to earth and just wanted to hang out and shoot some pool. He seemed oblivious to how talented he is and how much I admired him. We chatted in between games and I found out that Lorrie is in fact real and he taught me what it meant to hedge a bet (which I still don’t really understand, but A for effort).
All in all, a down to earth nice guy.
I was saddened to hear the recent news of Evan’s struggles, although I’d heard of show cancellations. No one ever wants to see anyone struggling. Especially not someone you admire. Turnpike will always have my support and I hope Evan gets the help he needs.
Hey Evan “You're gonna be alright. You'll be fine. You can have a nickel outta my last dime".
Sending all the guys lots of support & hoping to see y’all back on the stage soon. You can do this Evan. Take all the time you need to get it right, but get it right. Johnny Cash it.
Hugs from NC 💗
